It’s Mental Health Awareness month – this year it’s more important than ever to break the taboo and stigma and talk about these issues. With the lockdowns, it’s been pretty hard for Australians struggling with anxiety, depression, suicide ideations.

1 in 3 Australians face mental illness in their life and the stigma around mental health prevents important conversations to make a change. Our goal is to represent the importance of self-love, individuality and mental health awareness.

We all have a role to play.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to have conversations with your friends, family and community about mental health and wellbeing.

Everyone tells you to reach out if you’re feeling mental distress, but sometimes reaching out is really hard. Stigma, shame, and prejudice all contribute to people feeling unable to reach out when they’re going through tough times.

As a Mental Health Ally you can shift the world to be safer and more supportive for people experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

Demonstrate Your Support

  • Speak up – Boost a person’s voice if they are speaking from experience or speak up when there are no people with that experience or if the person isn’t able to self-advocate (especially if they’re experiencing distress). Or simply wearing a conversation-starting shirt would possibly be a catalyst to that all important conversation about mental health.
  • Safe – Allies can also demonstrate safety by being gentle and humane in the way they interact with people, and normalise talking about feelings. The more that everyone communicates about their feelings, the safer it is to disclose when those feelings become overwhelming.
  • Donate – You can show your support and help those in need by donating to causes that champion mental health awareness. We at Far From FKN Normal proudly donate 10% of profits to mental health charities like Beyond Blue and Life Line 24/7 Crisis Support.

This World Mental Health Month, Far From FKN Normal proudly partners with Lifeline 24/7 Crisis Support in their mission in empowering Australians to be suicide-safe through advocacy, education and providing important opportunities for connection.

Let’s start a conversation and fight mental health stigma!
